Conference Networking

The conference is almost upon us.  Many of us are looking forward to connecting with friends and colleagues across the country, as well as the myriad of fabulous sessions that are being presented.   This is the time of year that many of us introverts get nervous (yes there ARE introverts in student affairs), and that isn’t just the new grads searching for jobs, or the new professionals wanting to get engaged in our professional organization.   I wanted to provide a few tips for engaging in the conference and making the most of your time there:

1.)    Wear your nametag and introduce yourself.  If you are sitting in an educational session, introduce yourself to those sitting around you as you already have something in common – an interest in the topic.  Write their name and school down and follow up after the conference.
2.)    Tweet!  There will be lots of great connectors using twitter at the conference, and this is a great way to stay in the know.  You should follow @tbump, @ericstoller, @DSchmidtRogers, @jtrayan @JPKirchmeier @JoeGinese @amberagd @DeanElmore @EdCabellon and of course @naspatweets .  I am looking forward to meeting these folks in real life, although not completely sure who is attending.
3.)    Network throughout the conference, not just with perceived VIPs.  I know it’s really cool to visit with the SSAOs, but frequently the people to “know” are the other leaders on their campuses.
4.)    If you are looking for contacts, only ask for three things 1) information, 2) advice, 3) referrals.  NEVER ask for a job.  It’s a nonstarter.
5.)    Be genuine and listen to what folks have to say.
6.)    After the conference follow up and connect with the people you met – remind them where you met and ask if it is okay to contact them for advice at a later time.
The last point to make is find time to recharge.  The conference is non-stop and if you are going in early for the Placement Exchange, you are likely to be spent.  Take time for yourself, but remember you are investing in your future.

If you can’t make the conference, make sure you engage through the backchannel at #NASPA11 great people and great connections  @kristendom and @grubester will be there.

  1. Great advice Eric! One thing I know is important for me while at NASPA is keeping in mind students. More specifically, I am always thinking about what graduate programs and opportunities do the various networks have to recruit students to their colleges and universities. How can I, as a resource, be an instrument in recruiting students to my campus is important to me. I think sometimes we forget how significant our role can be in promoting our campus beyond our positions. Looking forward to seeing everyone!
