Many of you may have seen the postings on Higher Ed today or elsewhere about the four nursing students at Johnson County Community College who were expelled for posting a photo of themselves with a human placenta on Facebook. One of the students has filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for lack of due process and lack of specificity in the schools code of conduct that addresses photographs or social media.
The specifics of this case will play out in the courts but I do think that the specificity in the code of conduct related to photographs or social media is one that we as a profession should be looking at. I believe most of us have statements in our codes that we use when dealing with social media (at least I have) but I haven’t seen one that specifically outlines photographs or social media.
So – what are you doing on your campuses? I’ll be keeping an eye on this case that’s for sure.
